A Refined Wireless Experience
Oz Cycles put the TX system through nearly 4,000 kilometers of riding across all conditions. What stood out to us wasn’t just the performance — it was the consistency. From smooth shifting to solid battery life and quiet operation, it proved itself as a real contender.
Let’s walk through what we saw — the strengths, the quirks, and why it still made the cut.
Comfortable, Confident Shifting
The ergonomics of the levers are spot on — comfortable in the hoods, stable during sprints, and well-proportioned even for riders with larger hands. They feel very similar to Shimano Di2, with a smooth rounded shape and a firm fit that doesn’t shift or twist over time.
The shifting paddles require a deliberate press to actuate — a design choice that avoids accidental shifts but does take a few rides to get used to. Some riders may miss a shift early on, but once dialed in, the response is crisp and easy to repeat. And for our customers? We handle that initial setup and fine-tuning before the bike ever reaches your hands.
Customisation Done Right
One standout feature of the TX system is the ability to fully customize your shifting logic. Want SRAM-style shifting? You can do that. Want to remap your front derailleur to a different button? Go for it. The Wheeltop app allows full configuration to suit your personal style.
Yes, the setup process can be unfamiliar at first — but again, that’s on us, not you. We handle all app pairing, gear mapping, and tuning in-house, so your bike arrives ready to ride, no head-scratching required.
Wireless Speed That Competes
When it comes to shifting speed, the TX system holds its own. In fact, Oz found it to be faster than Shimano Di2 at the rear derailleur in both “casual” and “competition” modes. The front derailleur is marginally slower, but only if you’re splitting hairs.
Chainring compatibility matters here — a worn or non-ramped ring will slow any system down. But when matched with the right components, the TX front derailleur changes smoothly and reliably, with no dropped chains reported over thousands of kilometers.
Small Details That Matter
There are a few thoughtful touches that stood out: the levers don’t rattle (unlike some higher-end brands), the system supports up to 14 speeds, and the hoods have stayed perfectly snug after months of riding — something even top-tier Shimano units struggle with over time.
Even the brake modulation feels dialed in. While Oz noted that Wheeltop’s stock pads are slightly less grippy than Shimano’s, we spec Shimano IceTech pads as standard. The performance is sharp, consistent, and on par with Ultegra-level braking.
Another feature we’re excited about: carbon lever options are available for riders who want a lighter, stiffer feel at the controls. And speaking of weight, the full TX system is right in line with Shimano Ultegra Di2 and SRAM Rival AXS — no unnecessary bulk here.
Not Without Flaws — But Nothing We Can’t Handle
No groupset is perfect, and the Wheeltop TX has a few quirks worth mentioning:
• Cross-chaining protection only works in one direction — it prevents small-small combos, but not big-big. While this isn’t ideal, it’s easily avoidable with proper shifting habits, and we tune each bike’s drivetrain to minimize wear and optimize chain line wherever possible.
• The initial app pairing and adjustment process can be fiddly, especially when setting gear spacing. But here’s the thing: you’ll never deal with it. We take care of every step of configuration before delivery — firmware updates, gear indexing, button logic — so the system is plug-and-play out of the box.
• The front derailleur does show a bit more wear over time, particularly on the inner guide plate. Oz speculated that the coating may be softer than Shimano’s, and we agree it could be improved. That said, it hasn’t affected performance — even after 4,000km and one bent derailleur hanger.
